Abstract

<PICT:0678303/III/1> In improved apparatus for analyzing gases or liquids by their characteristic absorbtions in which radiation from a source 1 passes through a test chamber 7 and a comparison chamber 6 to a pair of detectors 8, 8 unbalance of which is amplified at 9, a hollow transparent filter 4 composed of four quadrants two 14, 14, Fig. 2, of which contain the substance being tested for and the others 15, 15 being empty, is rotated in the radiation path either before or after the chambers 6, 7. The effect of this filter is to impart an intermittent interruption only to those wavelengths which the substance being tested normally absorbs. Amplifier 9 responds only to the alternating current unbalance of the detectors so that instrument 10 indicates directly the proportion of the test substance in the test chamber. Where chamber 7 contains two substances whose absorbtion bands overlap, the other two quadrants of the filter may be filled with this substance, the signals due to the two pairs of quadrants being distinguished by their phase relationship. A number of such filters may be used to detect a number of substances. The detectors may be thermo-elements, bolometers, photo-sensitive elements or photo-electric cells or a thin dark radiation absorber, e.g. a nitro-cellulose film may cause the expansion of gas near it which affects in turn the electrode of a membrane condenser.
