Abstract

<PICT:0634453/III/1> In known gas analysing apparatus infra-red rays from a radiating source 2 are chopped by a wheel 18, and passed through chambers 3, 4 one containing the gas to be analysed and the other a neutral or standard gas, to detecting chambers 5, 6 filled with the gas for which the contents of chamber 3 are being examined. If any of the same gas as is contained in chambers 5, 6 is present in chamber 3, part of the energy of a particular band of infra-red rays is absorbed so that uneven comparison of the gas in chambers 5, 6 results. The resulting pressure difference deforms a plate 13 forming one of the electrodes of a condenser or operating a moving coil or piezo crystal. To reduce or indicate the effect of leaks in chambers 5 and 6 the contents of which are well below atmospheric pressure, the chambers are according to the present invention joined by a capillary leak in a diaphragm 13, and through a further capillary tube to a pressure-gauge 17. Chambers 5 and 6 may be joined through a capillary leak to a reservoir of gas at the pressure of the detection chambers, or as shown, the whole apparatus may be surrounded by a reservoir 19. The Provisional Specification states that the capillary tubes may be rolled flat or drawn out.
