Abstract

<PICT:0761870/III/1> In apparatus for measuring the gas content of liquids by exposing the liquid to high vacuum to extract the gases and then measuring the volume of the gases, a spray chamber 17 is provided into which a measured sample of the liquid is sprayed through a nozzle 22, and the chamber forms part of a closed system provided with valves and means for varying pressure so that the sample can be recirculated through the nozzle. As shown the spray chamber 17 is connected to a liquid measuring chamber 14, 15 and through a receiving chamber 19 to graduated mercury manometer 25 and by flexible tube 28 to mercury reservoir 29. In use the apparatus is first filled with mercury by raising reservoir 29 and then a known volume of liquid is introduced through tap 13 to graduation 37. Pressure is then reduced by lowering reservoir 29 and the liquid flows into receiver 19; valve 18 is then adjusted so that by raising reservoir 29 the liquid is forced through narrow bore tube 21 to nozzle 22; this operation may be repeated until no more gas is released. The volume of the separated gas is adjusted to a known volume using one of the graduations 38, 39 on the neck of the measuring chamber and its pressure is measured on manometer 25; the gas content of the liquid may then be calculated. Preferably at least the measuring chamber is provided with a temperature control jacket. The apparatus may be adapted to measure the gases evolved in reactions, e.g. in blood tests
