Abstract
506,055. Photo-electric apparatus for detecting gases. BERNHEIM, G. W. Aug. 13, 1937, No. 22331. Void. Convention date, Aug. 13,1936. [Class 40 (iii)] Apparatus for the detection of noxious gases comprises means for projecting light from a single source through two containers 4, 5 side by side, each enclosing a translucent screen impregnated with a reagent which changes its colour or opacity on exposure to a gas to be detected. One of these containers is sealed, and the other is exposed to the action of external gas by means of tubes 14. The light passes through the two screens on to a photo-electric cell, the sensitive surface of which is divided into two equal parts by a groove or otherwise. In effect, two cells having a common anode are thus provided, and are connected in opposition to an indicator or signalling device 8. The presence of gas which affects the reagent in the open chamber 5 produces a change in the light beam falling on the corresponding sensitive surface of the cell, and thus operates the device 8.
