Abstract
479,662. Photometric apparatus. GAS ACCUMULATOR CO. (UNITED KINGDOM), Ltd. July 12, 1937, No. 19316. Convention date, July 11, 1936. [Class 40 (iii)] For measuring and/or indicating the diffusion of light in or the turbidity of a transparent medium, light is passed through the medium to be examined and two light - sensitive cells are arranged in the path of the rays in such a manner that an increase in the light diffusion by the medium will produce a proportional increase in the illumination of one of the cells and a corresponding decrease in the illumination of the other cell. The apparatus shown comprises a container for the medium M to be examined, and lenses 2, 5 for focusing light from a source 1, after passing through the container, on to an aperture in a photo-voltaic cell 6. After passing through the aperture, the light falls on a second cell 8 which is connected in series opposition to the cell 6 and to a measuring instrument 10. If the medium M is perfectly clear, only the cell 8 is activated, but if the light is dispersed by the medium, some of the rays fall on the cell 6 and a corresponding decrease in illumination of the cell 8 occurs. The consequent effect on the instrument 10 is a measure of the turbidity of the medium. In a modification, the cells are arranged in one and the same plane, the sensitive layer of one surrounding or being adjacent to that of the other.
