Abstract
1,253,945. Determining mercury in a gas photo-electrically. INCENTIVE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT A.B. April 3, 1970 [April 10, 1969], No.16095/70. Heading G1A. In an apparatus for determining mercury in a gas, ultraviolet radiation from a mercury lamp 12 passes through a first chamber 1 including or forming a measuring cell containing the gas sample, and an auxiliary chamber 6 containing a reference gas, e.g. a mercury-free specimen of the sample gas, the difference between the outputs of the photo-cells 13, 14 being indicative of the concentration of mercury in the sample. The two chambers 1 and 6 are equal in length, and the end walls 4, 5, 9, 10 are transparent to U.V. radiation. In the embodiment shown the measuring cell is co-extensive with the first chamber 1, but a measuring cell may be formed by partitioning-off a central part of the first chamber with U.V. transparent windows 20, 21 Fig. 3 (not shown). In this case the two end portions of the first chamber also contain the reference gas. In both embodiments, the difference between the photo-cell outputs is displayed on a meter or recorder.
