Abstract

The method of measuring the carbon potential of a furnace atmosphere described in the parent Specification in which the water vapour or CO 2 content and the temperature are measured and the carbon potential computed therefrom is improved by making periodic independent measurements of the carbon potential using a sample of iron exposed to the furnace atmosphere and subsequent chemical analysis of the sample and correcting the adjustment of the computing circuit if necessary. As shown, an additional bridge circuit 37 having an adjustable potentiometer 38 is provided for this purpose.
