Abstract
<PICT:0397815/III/1> In gas detectors of the kind comprising a chamber with porous walls through which the gas diffuses, a heated filament within the chamber, and means for indicating a reduction in pressure in the chamber due to the combustion of inflammable constituents, the sensitivity of the apparatus is increased by cooling the chamber and optionally also by humidifying the gas to be tested. The Figure illustrates a device comprising a chamber with permeable side walls 16, an electrically heated filament 17, and a diaphragm device 38 for signalling reduction in pressure by closing electric contacts 44. The chamber is enclosed in a larger chamber 11 containing water and the gas to be tested is introduced through a porous plate 23 below the water level. A cooling coil 28 is provided in the inner chamber. In a modification the gas is humidified by surrounding part of the porous walls of the chamber with water or by conducting water to them by means of a wick.
