Abstract

In a detector for inflammable gases in which the gas is burnt by a heated filament causing a reduction in pressure and the operation of an indicator, the combustion chamber is formed of non-porous material and is connected by gas-communicating means with a diffusion chamber provided with porous means for the entry of the gas to be tested. As shown, the top of the cylindrical metal combustion chamber 1 is formed by a metal disc 4 provided with apertures leading to the diffusion chamber 7, having a porous plate 6. The electric filament 9 is carried on a removable holder 10 and is heated through a spring contact 15 from a battery in the casing 18. One or more passages 19 lead to aneroid chambers 20 which through contacts 21, 22 operate a bulb 26 or a gas percentage meter (for <PICT:0588954/III/1> example as described in Specification 549,583). In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the combustion chamber and diffusion chamber are connected by pipes and in a further modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the apparatus is adapted to be attached to a battery casing for use with a cap or head lamp. A manometer or other pressure operated device may replace the aneroid chambers.
