Abstract
<PICT:0494882/III/1> A device for detecting poisonous gases &c. in the atmosphere comprises a combustion chamber 3 in which the air is subjected to heat by an electric filament 6 or a spirit lamp, and a test chamber 2 in which the products of combustion act on a test paper 18 or like indicator. A suitable test paper is treated with starch, potassium iodide, and potassium iodate, and is capable of indicating the presence of all gases yielding chlorine or sulphur dioxide as combustion products. The atmosphere enters by way of a filter chamber 14 containing absorbents to remove any impurity which might vitiate the test. To enable a poisonous gas to be identified a number of such chambers 14 containing absorbents for different gases may be connected in parallel and utilized in turn. Alternatively a series of different test papers may be used. The tube 1 connecting the combustion and test chambers may be lined with pure Para rubber to absorb any ozone formed by the combustion.
