Abstract

<PICT:0460835/III/1> <PICT:0460835/III/2> Apparatus for detecting impurities in the atmosphere comprises a chimney 1 in the upper end of which is fixed a preferably curved holder 10 holding a piece of suitable test material 12. A source of heat, preferably an electric lamp 16 is fitted in the base of the chimney to promote circulation of air within it, and to warm the air to the optimum temperature for reaction with the indicator. It may also serve to illuminate the indicator, which may be viewed through a window 15. The invention is particularly applicable to the detection of mercury, using a selenium sulphide indicator as described in Specification 264,820, [Class 1 (i)]. In this case the lamp should be of small actinic power.
