Abstract

485,937. Electric incandescent lamps with residual gases. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. (Patent-Treuhand-Ges. f³r Elektrische Gl³hlampen) Nov. 27, 1936, No. 32520. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (ii)] In a method of filling and sealing the envelope of an electric lamp containing a gas filling comprising a mixture of gases at a pressure substantially exceeding that of one atmosphere a part of the gas filling is introduced into the envelope and condensed by cooling the envelope, this temperature being maintained while another gas, which does not condense at that particular temperature, is introduced in a quantity which is insufficient to raise the pressure within the envelope to above one atmosphere, after which the bulb is sealed off. In an example the bulb of an electric incandescent lamp is connected to a system of tubes whereby it is connected first to an exhausting-pump and then to a container filled with krypton or xenon, or a mixture of those gases, at a predetermined pressure. The tap to the gas supply is then closed, and the lamp bulb cooled by immersion in a container filled with liquid air, which condenses the gas filling and reduces its pressure, whereupon the inlet tube is connected to a supply of nitrogen and finally sealed off in the usual manner by directing flames upon it. The lamp is then removed from the cooling-vessel and allowed to regain its normal temperature. Specification 473,863 is referred to.
