Abstract
199,691. Handelsvennootschap onder de Firma Vogels & Co. June 26, 1922, [Convention date]. Residual gases.-In manufacturing gas-filled incandescent lamps, the bulbs are subjected to a partial evacuation by means of a " pre-vacuum " pump and are filled with an inert gas or vapour which is exhausted, this step being repeated one or more times before the lamps are finally filled with an inert gas or vapour and sealed off with a content at a pressure of 45 to 76 mm. The lamps may be raised to the usual pumping temperature and a reducing agent may be introduced before pumping takes place. The Figure shows means for closing the lamps separately on the fork before sealing off in such a way that fracture or air leakage in any one does not affect the gas filling of the others. The bulbs 2 on the fork 1 are connected by tubes 3, 4, 5 to the pump which may be shut off by the cock 6. The filling gas supply is regulated by a cock 8, and mercury may be introduced into the fork from a supply 10 for shutting off the lamps. During pumping, the cock 11 is connected to a vacuum tube of the pump so that mercury is withheld from the fork, but when the lamps are to be removed or when air leaks into any of them, the cock 11 is connected to a compressed air pipe so that mercury enters the fork and closes off each lamp separately. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes a process in which the pressure of the gas finally left in the bulb before sealing is not limited to the range of 45 to 76 mm. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
