Abstract

A method of manufacturing gas discharge lamps wherein a glass tube which is provided at both ends with an opening through which the interior of the tube communicates with the space outside the tube is freed from unwanted gases during a thermal treatment by a flushing process in which a flow of inert gas enters through one opening and leaves the tube through the other, is characterized in that during the flushing process the tube communicates openly via the other of the openings with the open air and in that the pressure in the tube exceeds the atmospheric pressure. The flushing gas may be nitrogen or a rare gas, and the final filling may be one or more rare gases, mercury vapour or sodium vapour. If a rare gas is required in the final filling it is preferable to use only such rare gas in the last phase of the flushing process. In the manufacture of a curved lamp, flushing is continued during the bending process. The method enables the lamp manufacturing machine to be simplified since no ducts need be connected to one of the tube openings.
