Abstract

An ionization tube comprises a copper tube treated-to give it stability and to render its behaviour uniform-by (a) filling with 6N nitric acid for five minutes then rinsing, (b) drying and heating for several hours at 400 DEG C., (c) filling with nitrogen peroxide gas at a pressure of 1 atmosphere and again heating until the copper oxide coating has a dark velvety appearance, (d) evacuating the nitrogen peroxide and admitting argon to a pressure of 6 cm. of mercury. The copper tube is conveniently sealed into a hard glass tube, and fitted with a centrally disposed tungsten wire, the glass tube being sealed off after the above treatment.
