PURPOSE:To prevent a decrease of gas pressure in a metal vapor discharge lamp, by introducing gas lowering surge voltage in an outer tube, evacuating the gas and then again sealing the gas in the outer tube. CONSTITUTION:After a completion of assembly for a luminuous tube 1, bimetal 4, filament 5 and the like in an outer tube 7, vacuumizing work is performed in an exhaust process of the outer tube to introduce sealing gas into the outer tube 7, and then the gas is exhausted to again seal the sealing gas to the prescribed pressure in the outer tube 7. The sealing gas is to lower surge voltage generated when the bimetal is operated, and those including at least one of the xenon, krypton, argon, neon, helium and nitrogen are used. Though in the process of manufacture, where the gas is sealed immediately after vacuum exhaustion of the outer tube 7, the sealing gas is left contained in a glass inner face of the outer tube 7 to lower pressure of the gas, the manufacture in accordance with the above process can eliminate a change of the gas pressure to hold surge voltage to constant.
