Abstract
1441471 Metal vapour discharge lamps GENERAL ELECTRIC CO Ltd 14 Jan 1975 [14 Jan 1974] 01724/74 Heading H1D A discharge lamp having a fused silica envelope and a filling including mercury, a scandium halide and possibly another metal halide (neither halide being a fluoride) and the pressure being greater than one atmosphere, has on the interior surface of the envelope a coating of at least one of the oxides of scandium, yttrium, lanthanum and the rare earth metals, the coating at least partially penetrating the surface of the silica. The oxide can be applied by forming a metal film which is then oxidized in situ prior to filling the envelope. The metal film in such a process can result from decomposition of a halide of the metal, e.g. a monohalide produced by passing a higher halide over particles of the metal, the monohalide being introduced, possibly with hydrogen, at a temperature of 900‹ to 1100‹ C., the metal film so formed being heated at 1000‹ to 1200‹ C. in an oxidizing atmosphere such as air, oxygen or inert gas with oxygen or water vapour. A typical filling is 20 mg. sodium iodide, 10 mg. scandium tri-iodide, 12 mg. mercury and argon at 20 torr at room temperature in an envelope having a diameter of 18 mm. and an arc length of 90 mm. To form the oxide coating such a lamp requires 4 mg. scandium and 12 mg. scandium tri-iodide.
