Abstract

1502612 Metal vapour lamps THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 June 1975 [7 June 1974] 25471/74 Heading H1D To maintain arc stability with no or minimal ballast in a discharge lamp filled with Xe and/or Kr at 300-500 Torr cold-fill pressure plus a metal halide, the current density is made to exceed 16 ma./mm.<SP>2</SP>, based on the cross-section of the tube, by sufficient margin to cause the differential resistance dV/dI to become positive. The metal halide added in excess as the compound or elements is preferably a halide of any of Na, Li, Cd, Zn, Mn, In, Tl, Ga, Sn, Pb. In the Figure relating to a tube of 4 mm. bore, the transaction to positive slope occurs at 1A or 80 mA/mm.<SP>2</SP> with Xe and the halide indicated against the respective V-I curve. Luminous efficiences up to 125 L/W are attainable. The lamps are tubular, of quartz with pure or thoriated W electrodes (Fig. 2, not shown).
