Abstract

473,863. Discharge apparatus. AKTIEBOLAGET HAMMARBYLAMPAN. Feb. 10, 1937, No. 4029. Convention date, Feb. 11, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XI] In a method of filling electric incandescent lamps and discharge tubes with a gas which, even when the lamp is not in operation has a pressure exceeding atmospheric pressure, the pressure within the lamp during the sealing operation is kept lower than or substantially equal to the surrounding pressure. The lamp bulb may be evacuated by a vacuum pump, filled with gas and then cooled so that the contained gas is liquefied or solidified, the sealing next being carried out in the usual manner by heating the glass until it is softened sufficiently for the pressure of the outer atmosphere to press the walls of the stem together at the sealing point. The pressure within the lamp is subsequently increased by warming the lamp. The cooling may be effected by using liquid air in the manufacture of lamps containing Krypton or xenon or a mixture of those gases at high pressure, while liquid nitrogen is preferable in the production of high pressure argon lamps. Alternatively, liquid hydrogen or liquid neon may be used. The condensation of the filling gas may be carried out in a separate cooling plant and the condensed gas then supplied to the lamps through a heat-insulated conduit. The gas may also be supplied to a lamp by introducing therein a substance containing the gas in chemical or mechanical combination whereby, after sealing the lamp, the gas is liberated, for example by heating. Examples of such substances are the nitrides of alkali or alkaline earth metals, such as NaN3. For the production of hydrogen at high pressure in an electric discharge tube the hydride of lithium may be used which, upon heating, will liberate hydrogen.
