Abstract

980,477. Filling incandescent electric lamp bulbs with gas; discharge apparatus. FABRIQUES REUNIES DE LAMPES ELECTRIQUES S.A. March 19, 1963 [March 22, 1962], No. 10826/63. Headings HID and H1F. A method of filling an incandescent lamp bulb or discharge tube with gas comprises flushing the interior with inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, at above atmospheric pressure, introducing into the envelope during flushing a quantity of inert rare gas, condensing the rare gas on a cooled portion of the envelope wall and sealing the envelope. Cooling may be effected by a bath of liquid nitrogen and the two gases may be introduced into the envelope by means of a hollow needle having two channels. In the form shown, a tubular envelope 12 sealed at one end is supported by a bracket 13 with the lower end immersed in a bath 29 of liquid nitrogen. The filament 17 extends between metal strips 10, 11 connected to the lead-in wires 16, 19, one of the strips 10 being embedded in the seal at the lower end, and the other 11 being held on a support 14. Flushing gas is introduced through a hollow needle 18 having concentric channels and after flushing the flow of gas is maintained while the gas to form the main part of the filling is introduced through the second channel of the needle and condenses at the lower end. The tube is then sealed off. Needles having two side-by-side passages may be used.
