Abstract
<PICT:0862674/III/1> An apparatus suitable for analysis of nitrogen in nitrogenous compounds by heating with copper oxide in the presence of a stream of carbon dioxide and contacting the resultant gases with reduced copper metal, comprises an outer tube (2) sealed at one end and an inner concentric tube (1) entering at the other end, terminating short of the sealed end and having a side tube (3) at a point remote from the end nearer the sealed end of the outer tube, said side tube passing through the wall of the latter. The numerals relate to the Figure in which the tubes are made of quartz glass and the outer tube has a cone 12 for attachment to a glass piece 13 through which the apparatus can be connected to a nitrometer. The space between the inner and outer tubes is initially packed with copper oxide retained by asbestos or quartz wool plug 10. The inner tube is packed with a copper gauze plug 5, asbestos or quartz wool retaining plugs 6 and 8 and copper oxide 7. By passing hydrogen into the apparatus with the inner tube stoppered and heating, a copper packing is formed at 11. In use, carbon dioxide is passed through the apparatus while the substance to be analysed, contained in a porcelain boat 16 in a stainless steel or copper boat 17 and covered with copper oxide, is heated: a boat 19 of copper oxide is also present in the tube.
