1294943 Absorbing gaseous combustion products L A WEGNER and H WINKELMANN 10 Sept 1970 [13 Sept 1969] 43294/70 Heading B1R Apparatus for combusting and absorbing the gaseous products of combustion of specimens preparatory to determining the radioactivity thereof comprises a combustion vessel 1, a holder 4 for a specimen to be combusted and an absorption vessel 10 connected to the combustion vessel in a gas-tight manner. In use oxygen is introduced into the apparatus through a connection not shown, the specimen is ignited by a lamp 14 and the combustion products absorbed in a liquid absorbent in the vessel 10, the vessel 10 being such that it can be used in the subsequent measurement of the radioactivity. In another embodiment the absorption vessel is not connected directly to the combustion vessel and is located in a recess in a member connected to the combustion vessel. In a further embodiment the gas in the combustion chamber is circulated by a pump which withdraws gas through a tube extending into the absorption vessel to a point just above the liquid and returns it to the combustion chamber.
