Abstract

919,208. Ionization chambers. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Aug. 25, 1959 [Sept. 12, 1958], No. 29263/58. Addition to 882,977. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group XXXVI] An ionization chamber 11, Fig. 1, has an insulating plug 13 closing one end and supporting the metal capillary 16 of a gas chromatography column. As described, a brass chamber 11 is coated with a source 21 of alpha particles such as radium or radium D or with a strontium or tritium source of beta particles. The lower end is closed by a PTFE plug 13 having an extension 17 supporting the metal capillary 16 of a gas chromatography column which may form one electrode. The end of the extension 17 is bored to form a chamber 18 which may contain an electrode in the form of a gold wire 19 supported by the tube 16 end having a beaded or pointed end 20. Alternatively, a porous metal plug electrode 23, Fig. 2, may be used. The inside of the capillary 16 is coated with an involatile hydrocarbon oil fraction. A scavenging gas such as argon, nitrogen or air is passed through the chamber via ports 14, 15. A wire gauze shield may be interposed between the port 14 and the chamber 18.
