Abstract

1,070,741. lonization chambers. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Feb. 14, 1964 [Dec. 6, 1962], No. 46167/62. Heading H1D. Gas or vapour analysis apparatus is so constructed that the gas or vapour mixture undergoing analysis is prevented from contacting an internal ionizing means. As shown, an insulating body 2, e.g. of P.T.F.E., and a conductive body 3, e.g. of brass, are separated by an apertured cathode 4 and insulator 5 to form a detecting chamber 8 and a chamber 11 for an ionizing means of sodium 226 sandwiched between gold or silver foils formed into a cylinder 12. An inert gas such as nitrogen introduced through a pipe 13 provides a flow through the orifice 6 thus preventing the mixture for analysis, which is introduced through a pipe 10, from entering the. chamber 11. A pipe 14 provides an outlet for all the gases. The presence of various components in the gas mixture is indicated by changes in the electron current between the cathode 4 and an anode 7 which is supported in the chamber 8 by a plug 9. The detector may be operated either as an electron-capture type or as an electron mobility type. Alternatively, a recessed conductive insert may replace the plug 9 to provide an argon detector (Fig. 2, not shown).
