Abstract

1284388 Sealing glass COMPAGNIE INDUSTRIELLE FRANCAISE DES TUBES ELECTRONIQUES 15 July 1970 [15 July 1969] 34412/70 Heading C1M [Also in Division H1] The pumping tip of a gas-tight enclosure extends into the enclosure and is provided with an end which can be melted and closed off by infra-red radiation. In Fig. 2 a metal exhaust tube 4 is provided with a tip 9 preferably of glass which has been darkened or coloured by reduction of some of its constituent oxides so that it absorbs infra-red radiation. After exhaustion through the pipe 5 and rubber connector 6 the end 9 is irradiated through a part of the envelope 3 transparent to such radiation with infra-red radiation IR which melts the end so that it seals the tube 4. The tube 4 may be of glass instead of metal (Fig. 1, not shown). The apparatus may be a gas-filled or a high vacuum type such as an electronic tube, a cathode-ray tube, or a reed relay. A reed contact unit is illustrated (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) and includes a getter to absorb residual gases.
