Abstract
652,702. Discharge apparatus. HILGER & WATTS, Ltd. March 25, 1948, No. 8868. [Class 39 (i)] A window is sealed in a vacuum vessel in such manner as to permit its free expansion independently of the envelope. The window 8 is supported by a ledge 7 formed at the end of glass tube 5, with an intervening metal washer 9. A flat annulus 10 of silver, aluminium or tin foil has its outer periphery cemented to the end surface of the tube 5 and its inner periphery cemented to the window 8. The foil yields sufficiently to allow expansion of the window without constraint. The foil may also be of L-section, according to the Provisional Specification. In Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), the construction is applied to the sealing of a rectangular window in a cylindrical glass envelope, suitable dimensions being given. The construction may be used for X-ray tubes, or for alkali halide windows in infra-red apparatus.
