Abstract

678,971. Discharge apparatus. HILGER & WATTS, Ltd. April 30, 1951 [April 28, 1950], No. 10559/50. Addition to 652,702. Class 39 (i). The method of sealing a window over an aperture in a vacuum tube in which the window is cemented in a frame of flexible metal foil which is cemented to the tube, so that the window may expand independently of the tube envelope, as described in the parent Specification, is modified for use with thick flat or lens-like windows. In Fig. 2 the sealing ring 3 of foil is cemented to the tube envelope 1 and the hemispherical window 6. An annular groove 4 allows play during expansion and prevents penetration of cement between parts 1 and 6; diametral grooves 5 enable groove 4 to be evacuated. A suitable cement is silver chloride, but as this corrodes glass and other substances, a protective layer of metallic silver may first be burnt on to the surfaces to be cemented.
