494,325. Variable-speed gearing. BURKHARDT, G. F. Jan. 18, 1937, No. 1521. Void. Convention date, Jan. 17, 1936. [Class 80 (ii)] In variable-speed gearing for automobiles, motor-cycles, &c., a pair of conically toothed members 3, 4 on the driving-shaft 1 engage spring teeth on the correspondingly coned surfaces of a floating wheel 10, which has external spur teeth, and friction rings 12, engaging with a similar floating wheel 11 engaging with the cone members 8, 9 on the driven shaft 2. The cone members may be manually controlled to slide axially on their shafts. In a modification, Fig. 3, automatic gear-change is produced by employing one pair only of conical members spring- pressed towards each other on the driving shaft 21 and one floating wheel 25 which engages a spur wheel 26 engaging a wheel 30 on the driven shaft 29 and pivotally carried thereupon by levers 28. A chain or belt may connect the driving floating wheel 5 to a sprocket or pulley secured on the driven shaft.
