Abstract

491,018. Regulating. SWINNEY, T. J. Feb. 24, 1937, No. 5526. [Class 7 (vi)] In compression-ignition engines, the air is supplied to the cylinders through at least two pipes, preferably concentric, one only of which is provided with a throttle valve, so that where the suction in the induction pipe is used for braking or other external purposes, this suction effect will not be entirely eliminated if the throttle should become locked in the closed position. The Figure shows air-inlet pipes 5, 8, the inner one of which is free, while the outer one is adjusted by an annular throttle valve 10 working over a spherical enlargement 9 on the inner pipe. A Venturi or choke element may be fixed within the inner pipe ; or the outer pipe may be unobstructed and the inner pipe provided with a butterfly throttle.
