Abstract

460,377. Regulating ; cylinder inlet pipes. SWINNEY, T. J. July 26, 1935, No. 21327. [Classes 7 (ii), 7 (iii), and 7 (vi)] An induction system comprises two concentric passages for the supply of working fluid to the engine, the flow in such passages being controlled by valves rotating about a common axis. In Diesel engines, one passage may supply hot air and the other cold air, while in carburetter engines one may supply air and the other mixture. The Figure shows the two passages 7, 8 arranged coaxially, with throttle valves 12, 13 mounted on a common axis. The valve 12 is annular and works over a spherical enlargement 11 on the inner passage. The two valves may be connected to a common control through links provided with turn-buckles for adjusting the relative positions of the valves ; these may be such that the inner passage is slightly open when the outer one is closed. The outer passage, at the part surrounding the enlargement 11, may be shaped to give a Venturi action. Instead of butterfly valves, spherical or cylindrical valves with through-passages may be used. The outer passage may be provided with webs, which may be of helical formation to cause a turbulent flow.
