Abstract

522,592. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. DODSON, E. Dec. 10, 1938, No. 36077. [Class 135] A boost control for supercharged aircraft engines of the kind provided with an air leak for varying the controlling effect has the air leak controlled by a valve operatively connected to a pressure sensitive device responsive to atmospheric pressure. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 the usual boost control 1 has a capsule housed in a chamber 3 connected on the one hand with the induction manifold 5 through a pipe 4 fitted with a restriction 10 and on the other hand with the carburetter intake 8 through a pipe 6 fitted with a Venturi contraction 9. 'The pipe 6 is provided with a manually operated leak control valve 7 and an automatically controlled leak valve 19. This valve is shown as actuated by a spring-loaded diaphragm 12 subject on one side to induction pipe pressure and on the other to the pressure produced in a forwardly facing intake 17 consequent on the translation speed and height of the craft. In a modification the flared intake is replaced by a Venturi the neck of which is connected to the diaphragm chamber so that the leak is decreased with increasing speed in place of increasing. The diaphragm may act on the valve 19 through a lever with an adjustable fulcrum. To prevent leakage past the spindle of the valve 19 the controlled fluid may pass through a Venturi 45 the neck of which is connected to an annular recess 42 surrounding the valve spindle. A modification is described having four leak control valves in series one actuated manually, one by induction pipe pressure, one by the difference between inductive pipe pressure and a pressure due to the translational speed and one actuated by a bellows connected to a thermal feeler responsive to the engine cylinder, blower or atmospheric temperature. These four leak control valves may be byepassed by a single manually operated valve. Specifications 419,113, 449,078, and 455,106, [all in Group XXVII], are referred to.
