Abstract
485,410. Thermionic cathodes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and RANDALL, J. T. March 17, 1937, No. 7817. [Class 39 (i)] The cathode of dis charge devices of the type filled with rare gas or a mixture of a rare gas and metal vapour and adapted to operate with a discharge current of not less than 150 m.A., consists of a metal cup 1, preferably nickel or iron, containing an akaline earth silicate material 2 of the kind described in Specification 384,067 or 411,266. The material is ground, mixed with castor oil to form a thick paste and placed in the cup, being thereafter heated in stages of 700-1000‹ C. for half an hour, 1000-1300‹ C. for 10 minutes and finally to 1300‹ C. for half an hour. The material is formed with a concave surface as shown and has a central hole 5 to facilitate de-gassing. Preferably, a sheet of gauze 3 is placed in the bottom of the cup to assist adhesion.
