Abstract
472,333. Electrode materials. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. (Patent- Treuhand-Ges. fur Elektrische Gl³hlampen) April 3, 1936, No. 9881. [Class 39 (i)] In the manufacture of thermionic cathodes the thermionically active material, or the material which is heated to produce the active material, is made into a paste with a binder which is a non-hygroscopic oil, stable in air, substantially less volatile than glycerine, and which evaporates without residue, the paste being subsequently applied to a metallic support and heated to disperse the binder and to sinter the active material. In an example, a mixture of 4 parts of powdered alkaline earths and one part of powdered tungsten is made into a paste with one part of castor oil and is sintered finally at 1700‹ C. The alkaline earths may be a mixture of barium and calcium oxides, preferably pre-sintered at 1300‹ C. before mixing. Water-glass may be added as a cement. The cathodes so prepared are stated to be suitable for high-brightness mercury vapour discharge lamps. The use of essential oils is disclaimed.
