[Class 39 (i)] In an output tetrode the maximum dimension of the anode does not exceed 40 mms. and the distance between the control grid and screen is made so small, preferably less than 0À8 mm., that the anode current-anode voltage characteristics are free from inflections over the range used in operation, even when the screen grid voltage is as high as 250 volts. Penetration of the field of the control grid into the anode-screen space assists in the production of the necessary potential minimum, which could not be produced by the prescribed anode spacing alone. In an example, an indirectlyheated cathode is surrounded successively by oval control and screen grids having least internal diameters of 3À18 and 4À33 mms. respectively, and by a cylindrical anode 25 mms. in diameter. Full dimensions of the valve are given and its characteristics are compared with those of a standard pentode. Specifications 423,932 and 441,849 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 423,932.
