Abstract

495,242. Thermionic valves and valve circuits. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Jan. 21, 1938, No. 2069. Convention date, Feb. 26, 1937. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] An electron-discharge tube compriss a pair of spaced anodes 14, 15, Fig. 1, a pair of electrically connected control electrodes 25<1>, 26<2>, one respectively adjacent each anode, a second pair of electrically connected control electrodes 252, 261, one respectively adjacent each anode and four cathodes 18<1>, 18<2>, 19<1>, 19<2> each cooperatively associated with only one of the control electrodes and its associated anodes. The anodes are provided with recesses 16<1> in which are disposed the cathodes and grids associated therewith. Each grid comprises a plurality of U-shaped wires united to a metallic plate 27. Four triode units are thus formed having substantially equal inter-electrode capacities and impedances. The tube may be used as a push-pull amplifier, an input coil 32, Fig. 3, being connected to all the grids and an output coil 36 to the anodes. One end of each cathode is connected to earth by means of a common lead 24, all the cathodes being connected thereto within the valve. A two-way switch 40 is provided which serves to connect one or other of the diametrically opposite pairs of cathodes in series. By this means if one pair of units of the valve should break down, operation of the switch to its second position enables the other pair of units to be used. Inherent gridplate capacitances are automatically neutralized by the arrangement disclosed. The device may be used as an oscillator which may be crystal controlled or as a negative feed-back amplifier, only one pair of diagonally opposite cathodes being energized at a time. Alternatively, when used in an oscillator all the grids may be connected in parallel and all the four units work simultaneously.
