Abstract
829,487. Thermionic valves. EGYESULT IZZOLAMPA ES VILLAMOSSAGI R.T. March 6, 1956 [March 8, 1955], No. 7075/56. Class 39(1). A tube used for amplification of low voltages of the order of one microvolt has a set of focusing electrodes between anode and cathode, and at least one further electrode between the focusing electrodes and the anode ; circuit means are provided so that a virtual cathode is set up on the said further electrode, to which is also applied an input signal so that it acts as a control electrode. The focusing electrodes are, shown in Fig. 1 as a series of plate 7-10, each having a small slit 29. The first plate 7 has a variable negative bias with respect to cathode 5, -while plates 8, 9, 10 are positively biased. The formation of the virtual cathode depends on the density and. dimensions of the electron beam, applied voltages, and other tube parameters, and an equation is given relating these quantities. The virtual cathode is arranged to be set up at the gap 35 in the electrode 11 which acts as control grid. This gap may be a narrow slit 22, as shown in Fig. 2, or an elongated slit, Fig. 3 (not shown), or a slit in which a set of very thin wires 32 are arranged, either longitudinally, as in Fig. 4, or transversely (or both). Two further grids are shown ; a positive grid 12 and a suppressor grid 13.
