Abstract
917,686. Thermionic valves. STANDARD COIL PRODUCTS CO. Inc. May 21, 1959 [July 25, 1958], No. 17351/59. Class 39 (1). A vacuum tube operable in the V.H.F. signal range comprises a cathode 23, Fig. 1, extending longitudinally of the tube and surrounded by a wire control grid 24, and a plate structure 22 having inactive portions 32, 33, more remotely spaced from the grid than are active anode portions 25, 26, and shielded from the grid by members 30, 31, which have edge regions substantially coplanar with edge regions of the active anode portions. Such a tube may give an amplification factor of 75, a dynamic plate resistance of 8,000 ohms at 10 mA. plate current with a transconductance of 9,000 ohms and a control grid to plate capacitance of 0.38 ÁF., the average noise signal being reduced over conventional triodes and the normal plate voltage raised to 200 volts. Instead of being circular as shown, the electrodes may be of generally elliptical or rectangular cross-section, Figs. 5-11, not shown. Instead of being a generally cylindrical member surrounding the control grid, the plate structure may comprise two hollow cylindrical members 161, 162 as shown in Fig. 12.
