Abstract

679,176. Thermionic valves. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL, Ltd. Aug. 31, 1948 [Sept. 3, 1947], No. 22915/48. Class 39 (i). [Also in Group XL (c)] In a frequency modulation detector (see Group XL (c)) two voltages with a phase difference depending on the frequency deviation are applied to the two control grids of a valve with at least five grids. The mutual conductances of the grids are made lower than the saturated anode current in milliamps divided by four volts. A tubular cathode 18 is surrounded by an accelerator grid 19, first control grid 21, first screen grid 22, second control grid 23 and a second screen grid 25, all of elliptical crosssection, and a circular cylindrical anode 24. The pitch of the control grids 21, 23 is so arranged that at least two sections of the second control grid 23 of different pitch cooperate with a section of grid 21 of constant pitch. The tubular cathode is coated with electron emitter over a short length (1-10 mms.). The accelerator grid 19 and first screen grid 22 are connected to a positive voltage source of less than 40 volts. In order to reduce the current taken by the first grid, two rods, preferably connected to the cathode, may be provided between the cathode and the supports of the grid or the cathode may be coated only on the sides opposite the active part of the grid and the supports coated with insulating material on their inner sides.
