Abstract
470,473. Exhaust-silencers; aircraft. BLANCHARD, J. G. Feb. 14, 1936, No. 4512. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] Exhaust-silencers for aircraft and other engines comprise a number of silencing-units connected in parallel to a common inlet and a common outlet, and disposed within a casing, preferably a substantially streamlined part of an aircraft. Figs. 1 and 2 show a series of silencing-units 6 arranged in a casing 7 within the streamlined engine nacelle 2 mounted on wings 25. A similar casing is provided at the opposite side of the nacelle, the exhaust being led from an annular manifold 3 by conduits 15 to headers 16 at the inlet ends of the silencing-units. The exhaust enters the units through apertures 13 in the end wall 8 of the casing 7, and flows out through similar apertures in the opposite end wall 9 into headers 19 connected by conduits 20 to a common exit pipe 5. The cooling-air which passes over the engine enters pipes 23 which run along the wings and are open to the nacelle, and escapes at 24. The silencing-units may be constructed, as described in Specification 448,878, of a series of Venturi members 11, 12 arranged in cylindrical casings 10 apertured at 17. The units may be housed in the lower part of the nacelle, or may be arranged with their axes more or less vertical. Specification 137,082, [Class 4], also is referred to.
