Abstract

521,395. Exhaust-silencers. BLANCHARD, J. G. Nov. 14, 1938, No. 33086. [Class 7 (ii)] A number of silencing-units 2, each connected to a different cylinder or set of cylinders of the engine, are arranged in a common casing 1 so as to provide a path by which a portion of the exhaust gases escape into the casing at a high pressure, 'means being provided enabling another portion of the gases to expand into the casing, which is provided with a number of outlets through which the high-pressure gas exercises an ejector effect to carry with it the expanded gas in the 'casing. In Fig. 1, the units 2 are of the form described in Specification 448,878, and comprise inlets 3 leading to Venturi tubes H mounted in perforated cylindrical casings 5 with straightthrough outlets at 8. Opposite the outlets 8 are outlet openings 4 in the casing provided with deflectors 16 directed backwards with regard to the airstream. A cover 17, Fig. 2, may be secured over the openings 4, and is formed with lowered outlets 18 strengthened by ribs 20. The casing 1 may be shaped to the available space with the skin of an aircraft fuselage or engine nacelle. In the case of radial engines, the casing may be annular or part-annular and may be of streamline crosssection. It may also serve to heat air for use in heating the cabin, or to generate steam, air or water tubes being arranged for this purpose within the silencer casing. In another form, the silencing-units have their axis parallel to the axis of the casing. Silencing-units as described in Specifications 366,257 and 426,769 may also be used.
