Abstract
549,700. Pumps. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-. (Turbo Engineering Corporation). Oct. 24, 1940, No. 15652. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXVI and XAXIII] An exhaust-driven turbo-compressor for supercharging the engines of aircraft or vehicles, and adapted to be arranged in the airstream, comprises a casing 8 having a forwardly-directed opening 22 through which the airstream enters in passing to compressor stages 20, 24 discharging at 10 to the engine, the exhaust from which enters at 12 into a chamber 32 leading by nozzles 30 to the blades 28 of a turbine mounted on the same shaft 14. The shaft 14 is hollow for the passage of cooling-air, which passes through holes 40 in the shaft into a chamber 42 having outlet apertures 44. Some of the air from the compressor is also directed through a passage 34 to cooling-passages 36, and is discharged at 38 with the exhaust gases. This discharge may be such as to assist in the propulsion of the aircraft &c. In modifications, the upper part o,f the casing 8 may be arranged within the body of the aircraft &c. or the whole unit may be disposed within a wing of an Aircraft inlet and discharge passages to and from the unit being formed in the wing structure.
