144,259. Moss, S. A. May 31, 1919, [Convention date]. Regulating.-A centrifugal compressor driven by a turbine actuated by exhaust gases supplies air to the carburettors for the engine. The compressor is fitted immediately behind the propeller of an aeroplane and comprises a double inlet casing 26 with discharge vanes 25, surrounding an impeller 21 supported on a shaft 22, which also carries the turbine rotor 28 and is mounted on bearings 23, 24. One inlet eye is formed by the flared flange 32 which supports the bearing 24, which is cooled by the entering air. The other inlet is the annular casing 33 with its transverse extension 34 which opens forwardly beyond the periphery of the discharge casing 20. Exhaust is caused to pass from the manifolds to the chamber 18 by closing valves on these manifolds. The chamber 18 is provided with a number of nozzles 30, which direct the gases on to the turbine buckets 29. The flange 38 and radial extensions thereof deflect the gases to the atmosphere, and heyond the said radial extensions the buckets are exposed to cooling-air from the conduit 40. From the outward casing of the compressor, the air passes by way of conduit 16 to the carburettors.
