Abstract

468,360. Valve gear. AMERY, G. Dec. 21, 1935, Nos. 35438/35 and 4292/36. [Class 7 (vi)] In an engine having fuel-injection valves provided with opening-pistons and closing- pistons, fluid pressure is supplied to the pistons of the several valves by a distribution unit, so that when the pressure is relieved from the closing-piston the valve is opened, and when the pressure is applied to the closing-piston the valve is closed against the action of the fuel pressure thereon. Fig. 3 shows the invention applied to the actuation of the fuel-injection valves 15 of an engine, which are opened by the fuel pressure in pipes 13, 14 acting on shoulders 19 on the valves, when fluid pressure acting on pistons 20 at the top of the valves is cut off by a distribution unit 25. This fluid acting on the pistons 20 may be the fuel supplied by a pump 11 to the pipes 13, 14, and is conveyed by a pipe 26 to an annular pipe 36 surrounding the distributer and having branches 37 leading to valve chambers 32, 33, 34, &c. which have pipe connections 21, 31, 41, 51 to the various injection valves. Each of the chambers 32, 33, 34, &c. is fitted with a piston valve 43, Fig. 1, contacting with a central cam 53. When a valve 43 is in the position shown at the top of Fig. 1, fluid is supplied to the piston 20 of the corresponding injection valve, to maintain it closed; but when the valve is actuated by the cam, as shown at the bottom of Fig. 1, the fluid is released through passages 143, 59, 60, and the corresponding injection valve is opened. The cam 53 is tapered at 58, so that the duration of fuel injection can be varied by sliding the cam axially. The time of injection is advanced or retarded by axial adjustment of a helical gear 56 which drives the cam. According to the first Provisional Specification the invention may be applied to ordinary inlet and exhaust valves. Specifications 353,621 and 442,532 are referred to.
