Abstract

17,606. Evans, A. F., and Wilson, R. P. Aug. 1, 1912, [Convention date]. Starting ; reversing.- In hydraulic valve-gear of the type having a camactuated plunger and a piston on the valve stem, an auxiliary plunger V is provided, acted upon by the starting-air, to open the valve if the engine has stopped with the camactuated plunger in its inward position, as shown. The gear is shown applied to the starting-valve, and a port b is provided in the auxiliary cylinder U. through which fl ui d escapes when the starting-air is turned off and the piston V occupies its uttermost position. A similar port a in the cylinder G allows escape of fluid if the piston V descends while the piston D is in its outer position. Similar gear is provided for the valves for normal running, but in these cases, the port b is omitted. Duplicate gear is provided for backward starting and running, and the action of the valves is controlled by a number of three way cocks, all of which may be worked together.
