Abstract

466,055. Projectile fuzes. BIRKIGT, M. March 13, 1936, No. 7614. Convention date, Jan. 17. [Class 9 (i)] Relates to percussion fuzes of the kind in which the firing-pin is locked by balls which after the shot is fired bear on a surrounding conical wall whereby in moving outwards to release the firing-pin they displace a member longitudinally. According to the invention, the conical wall is normally out of the zone of action of the balls and is brought to operative position by the effect of acceleration when the shot is fired. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the balls 13 rest on a seat 14 and support a conical shoulder 18 on the firing-pin 7 so long as they are confined by the cylindrical rear part of a ring 16 held by friction in the forward position. When the shot is fired, the ring 16 sets back and a conical wall 17 thereon comes opposite the balls 13. These gather rotational speed and ride outwards and up the conical wall 17 to release the firing-pin. The conical shoulder 18 has a larger angle than the conical wall 17, so that the balls, in riding, out push the firing-pin forward before releasing the shoulder. The firing-pin is made of steel and is attached to a head of light metal 11 by a joint 20, which can yield to an accidental blow before the balls have moved out. The front of the fuze body 1 is closed by a small disc 10. In another form, Fig. 7, the balls 13 are normally confined by a tightly fitting cylindrical ring 22, which, when the shot is fired, sets back with a loose ring 23 on which the conical wall 24 is formed. The balls then wedge the ring 23 forward again in moving out to release the shoulder 12 of the firing-pin.
