Abstract

535,579. Ammunition projectiles. PATCHETT, G. W. Oct. 9, 1939, No. 27548. [Class 9 (i)] Relates to percussion fuzes of the kind in which a striker is moved into alignment with an ignition cap by the action of a gyroscopic element rotated by frictional engagement with the projectile and serving to arm the fuze during flight. According to the invention, the gyroscopic element is so mounted in the projectile that in addition to the usual three degrees of freedom of movement it has a further movement in a direction along the axis of the projectile. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the gyroscopic element 16 carrying the striker 18 is assembled with its axis inclined, the lower end resting on a washer 19 having a central aperture leading to the percussion cap of the detonator 15. The element has concentric spherical surfaces 20, 21 engaging a spherical abutment face 23 on a hollow impact member 24 the forward movement of which is restrained by centrifugal spring members 29. On firing, the rotation of the projectile causes release of the members 29 and during acceleration the member 24 presses on the element 16 and imparts spin so that during deceleration, when the member 24 moves forward, this element can move to bring its axis into line with the axis of the projectile. On impact, the member 24 is forced inwards to move the striker into engagement with the percussion cap. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the gyroscopic element is set with the striker pin 40 at right angles to the axis of the projectile and is retained by a washer 42 which sets back on discharge. The impact member 24 also moves rearwardly during acceleration to retain the gyroscopic element in frictional engagement with the washer. When deceleration occurs, the member 24 moves forwardly and the gyroscopic member precesses until the pin 40 is in line with the axial percussion cap. The gyroscopic member is in the form of two interfitting discs 39 enclosing a central gapped loading disc 43.
