Abstract

613,613. Projectiles. FERREL, C. B. June 19, 1946, No. 18425. [Class 9 (i)] A projectile having a main body portion A terminating in a pointed forward end 2 is provided with a longitudinally-extending chamber 3 open at the rear end and terminating in a flat face 4 at the forward end to accommodate a propelling-charge B of detonating type, having a conical recess in its forward end, and a primer-disc C, a disc 8 of the same composition as the propelling charge being sprung into an annular groove 9 in the chamber 3 to hold the propelling-charge B and primer-disc C in position. The propelling-charge which may be moulded trinitro-toluene is recessed to receive the primer-disc C which may be fulminate of mercury. The body of the projectile is made of steel and in place of a copper driving band an annular fin 5 integral with the body is provided for engagement with the rifling of the gun barrel. With a gun barrel 30 mms. in diameter the fin projects 1/6000 ins. The rear end of the projectile is tapered to fit a tapered seat in the bolt head of the gun. A firing pin in the bolthead detonates the fulminate of mercury, which then detonates the main charge.
