Abstract

1,195,184. Projectiles and mortars. FORSVARETS FABRIKSVERK. 4 March, 1969, No. 11437/69. Headings F3A and F3C. A projectile 1 for a muzzle-loading rifle-bore mortar, has a resilient driving band 3 movable in a groove 2 which has a width considerably greater than the width of the band and a forwardly continuously increasing depth, the driving band being obliquely split and having a resiliency to permit radial expansion. The groove 2 has rifles 4 forwardly continuously decreasing in height. The projectile has a container 18 for propellant. The driving band is formed of copper. The mortar is formed with rifles 15 and a blind chamber 16. A conical surface 14 at the muzzle of the mortar causes the driving band to assume the same diameter as the rifled barrel of the mortar as it is being loaded. As the projectile approaches the end of its travel, the resilient driving band expands to a diameter corresponding to the diameter of the chamber 16. Following ignition of the propellant by a firing pin (not shown) in the bottom of the mortar barrel, the projectile advances and the driving band is driven rearwardly by a shoulder 17 until further rearward movement is prevented by a flank surface of the groove 2. Thereafter, the driving band engagas the rifles 15 and spins the projectile.
