Abstract

1,221,553. Mortars and projectiles. MECAR S.A. 27 Sept., 1968 [3 Oct., 1967], No. 45928/68. Heading F3A. A firing device comprises, in combination, a mortar having a barrel 1 and a launching rod 4 with a rigid firing pin 5; and a projectile 6 having a tail with a restriction 26, full-calibre fins 8, and a propellant charge 20 located forwardly of a piston 14 carrying a percussion cap 15; the tail and its restriction surrounding the rod 4 with clearance whereby, whilst the projectile is being propelled in the mortar barrel with the piston bearing against the end of the 4 under the influence of the gases from the ignited charge 20, there is no direct mechanical contact between the rod 4 and both the tail and its restriction. A sealing ring 21 surrounds the piston. During launching the restriction engages the piston and carries it away.
