Abstract

Aug. 11, 1953 '[April 17, 1953], No. 22160/53: Class 9(1) The mortar projectile shown in Fig. 1 has a body 1 filled with explosive and provided with bearing surfaces 2 to contact the barrel of the mortar and fins 3 forming aerodynamic supporting means. Attached to the body is a perforated tail tube 4 carrying stabilizing fins 5 and housing a propellent cartridge. The support fins 3 may extend from an annular ring screwed, pressed or otherwise fitted to the body 1. Fig. 2 shows fins secured to the projectile by forming longitudinal grooves in the body 1, each groove receiving the turned-up end 6 of a fin and a wedge 7 to secure the fin. The fins 3 may also be pivoted to the projectile so that they extend after discharge.
